Steve Shapiro is an Executive and Leadership Coach who works with clients through important transitions in their lives, organizations, and our nation. His focus is empowering his clients to develop a deeper awareness of themselves and others to have the biggest impact in the world. Steve also provides a listening space of excellence where strategic and creative ideas are turned and fulfilled.
Steve has worked as a mediator and attorney throughout his career. Steve’ s philosophy combines years of dispute resolution practice, mindfulness, and understanding how trauma impacts conflict to resolve difficult matters. At the heart is working with client’s core interests, developing a deep understanding of these interests, and having all clients cross what is imagined as a golden bridge through recognition, empowerment, and love for the other.
Steve earlier in his career served as Associate General Counsel for Verizon Government Services responsible for implementation and operation of the first network switching systems for DOD CONUS Wide. Following his work at Verizon, Mr. Shapiro served as a Federal Mediator for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, providing negotiation and conflict training to federal agencies and their contractors, and resolving disputes in the energy sector US -wide. Steve currently serves on the PJM and MISO roster of mediators.
Steve was resolving a water rights dispute in California on September 11, 2001, when he experienced the impact of these attacks in his bones, especially as a New Yorker – subsequently for the past 10 years he has consulted with the Department of Justice supporting the claims management for First Responders injured because of September 11.
Mr. Shapiro established Resolution Matters fifteen years ago as a mediator and arbitrator serving on the panels of the American Arbitration Association, the International Center for Conflict Prevention and Resolution, and many other neutral panels. Mr. Shapiro was selected by the State of Maryland to assist in establishing a health care collaborative in West Baltimore and developed a settlement among the Hispanic Business Community in Maryland. He has mediated EPA Superfund Disputes and a broad array of Electricity Power Grid disputes in the energy sector.
Steve understands that executives are human beings whose success is hinged on healthy communication systems and support structures within an organization. He brings an awareness of family systems coaching, trauma awareness coaching, and a deep compassion for his clients to manifest fulfillment in all aspects of their lives.
He is a past Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section, past Chair of the American Bar Association’s Special Project on ADR Confidentiality. Steve served as a Co-President for the Conflict Resolution Center for Montgomery County who provide mediation services in schools, prisons, District Court, police departments and neighbor to neighbor.
Steve graduated Adelphi University with a Business Management degree in Organizational Science, received his Juris Doctor from Antioch University School of Law, and has completed graduate law courses at GWU Law School in Government Contracts and Employment Law. He has also taken advanced law courses at Harvard studying at the Program on Negotiation, Advanced Mediation Skills, and Negotiation. He is trained as an Executive Coach at Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership.
Steve is married to his wife Jody Shapiro, has two children, Arielle, and Solomon, and has resided in Montgomery County, Maryland for the past 38 years.
